27th Indian Engineering Congress media coverage by Asian Education Group- ASC-UCLan team

International Journalism students had the actual feel of reporting when they trooped in to cover the three-day conference of Indian Engineering Congress inaugurated by the Indian President at the prestigious Vigyan Bhawan- the venue known for holding important national-level functions including Non Aligned Meet, CHOGM, Chief Minster’s Meet, etc.

The Institution of Engineers (India) was accorded the Royal Charter in 1935 by King George V and engineers attached to such institutions were known as Chartered Engineers. The students thus were given an opportunity to mingle with the top-notch engineers both of the country and international.

Generally the cub reporters are not sent to cover such functions for at least six months of their induction into any newspaper office. But here, the team had the opportunity to get a firsthand experience of such an event.

Asian Education Group was the media partner for the event. A team of 20 students from ASC – UCLan and ASMS were involved in covering the event. Coverage was done specifically in video, still photography and daily news letter for the three days. A news room had been set up at the venue itself on the second floor of Vigyan Bhawan for the students to file the stories as and when they came. The deadline was five in the evening and all their stories with the bylines were published in a newsletter that was distributed for the delegates, numbering over a thousand, at the venue the next day.

The students came to know the importance of accuracy of time, how the Delhi traffic police was managing the traffic outflow outside the premises to felicitate the President's arrival and departure, how important was it to follow the given deadline. The realization came when some of the stories of the student-reporters were killed after failing to meet the deadline. The students also learnt how to work with speed and got a chance to chisel their writing skills, and most important point they learnt that they need to be writing facts and not colouring the story. The figures need to be verified.

They also learnt the significance of attributes which is so essential - which they found later- to give credibility to their story.
In totality, it was a learning experience for them and such exercises will be repeated in the future too so that when they pass out from the university, they are armed not only with the degree but the professional experience and UCLan stamp that they can do well for they have been trained well.

The entire exercise was led by Mr. R.K Singh with a team of faculty members and 20 students. The camera coverage was monitored by Mr. Mantosh Kumar, the daily newsletter was taken out under the guidance of Mr. Nitin Saxena and Ms Neha Saluja. The designing and layout was completed by Ms Susipta Das and Ms Nimrata Bagga coordinated the activities, security, liaison with the organizers and guiding the students.
